Waymo Robotaxi "Snitches" On Two 15-Year-Olds Drinking & Shooting Orbeez Guns In Bay Area
Two 15-year-old boys were detained by police in San Mateo after their Waymo robotaxi reported their concerning behavior. The vehicle's remote monitors observed the teens drinking alcohol and firing a gel-bead blaster from the car. Waymo alerted the San Mateo Police Department, providing the car's precise location. The company then orchestrated a stop, telling the youths the vehicle was experiencing issues. This allowed officers to approach the car safely, initially treating it as a high-risk situation due to the perceived firearm. Inside the Waymo, authorities discovered the gel blaster, disguised to resemble a real gun, and open containers of alcohol. The teenagers cooperated fully and were released to their parents after being detained. Their case is now with the San Mateo County District Attorney's office for potential charges. Waymo's policy prohibits minors from riding unaccompanied and drinking alcohol in their vehicles. The incident highlights the surveillance capabilities of autonomous vehicles and Waymo's commitment to safety. Public reaction was varied, with some criticizing Waymo's actions while others appreciated the safety intervention.
