What to know about the 20 living hostages released by Hamas

Hamas released 20 living hostages held for over two years, marking a significant development in the conflict. President Trump declared the Gaza war over, citing a U.S.-brokered ceasefire that resulted in over 67,000 Palestinian deaths. However, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum emphasized that their mission continues until all hostages are accounted for and properly buried. As part of the agreement, Hamas is to return the bodies of 28 deceased hostages, with four bodies already returned to Israel via the Red Cross. In exchange for the hostages, Israel will release 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences and 1,700 others detained after the October 7th attacks. Freed Palestinians have been welcomed by joyous crowds in the West Bank and Gaza. The released hostages include brothers Ariel and David Cunio, abducted from Nir Oz, and Avinatan Or, taken from the Nova music festival. Several other individuals, including Bar Kupershtein and Elkana Bohbot, were also taken from the Nova music festival, some while working or providing aid. Others, like Eitan Horn and Matan Zangauker, were abducted from Nir Oz. The group also includes Nimrod Cohen and Matan Angrest, soldiers taken from tanks, and twin brothers Gali and Ziv Berman, abducted from Kfar Aza. The released hostages represent a range of backgrounds and ages, with their stories highlighting the human toll of the conflict and the long wait for their families.
