Why no one has a fun couch anymore
A data visualization from the European Correspondent tracked Ikea sofa colors in catalogs from 1960 to 2021. The analysis of 3,500 sofas revealed a significant shift towards neutral tones. In the 1960s, green and blue were prevalent sofa colors. By the 1970s and 1980s, tan and beige became increasingly popular. The 1990s saw a resurgence of patterned sofas along with black, red, and green options. During the 2000s, blue, black, and white were favored choices. However, a noticeable "blanding" occurred around 2011, with gray and beige dominating sofa offerings until the catalog's end in 2021. Currently, Ikea's website continues to show a preference for gray and beige couches. This trend is attributed to customer preferences and broader millennial design movements like blanding, favoring minimalist palettes. Despite the dominance of neutrals, there are emerging signs of color returning to interior design trends, with Ikea also reintroducing some vintage-inspired colorful pieces.
