Witkoff and Kushner meet with Putin about ending Ukraine war

President Trump's envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin. They discussed U.S. proposals for resolving the conflict in Ukraine. The goal is to restart direct talks between Russia and Ukraine, which have been stalled for six months. Putin expressed full trust in U.S. mediation efforts during the three-hour meeting. The envoys secured an agreement for a temporary pause in airstrikes to facilitate their travel to Kyiv. This pause was set to begin at midnight Saturday Moscow time. Putin indicated that Ukraine had also reduced its strikes, and he pledged to ensure the safety of negotiations. This visit marks the highest-level U.S. official engagement in Ukraine since the start of President Trump's second term. Witkoff and Kushner's expected arrival in Kyiv would be the first international flight landing in Ukraine since February 2022. Russian officials stated that the U.S. envoys came well-prepared with specific ideas for a resolution.
