Witkoff to present Putin with peace proposal after talks with Zelensky
White House envoy Steve Witkoff will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin to present an updated proposal to end the war in Ukraine. Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law, will join the meeting virtually. This meeting follows Witkoff's talks in Oslo with Ukrainian President Zelensky and other European leaders. The U.S. hopes these discussions will foster greater Russian willingness to compromise. Previously, President Trump agreed to lift sanctions on Russian diesel sales, a move welcomed by Moscow. The Oslo talks aimed to develop a unified "framework agreement" for peace. Ukraine presented new ideas and proposals, leading to meaningful progress and strong alignment at the working level. Kushner reiterated Trump's demand for Ukraine to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries. Zelensky indicated readiness to cease these strikes if Russia reciprocates. President Trump expressed his belief that Russia desires a resolution but voiced doubts about Zelensky's willingness to end the war. Trump urged Zelensky to make a deal, warning of worsening consequences for Ukraine if an agreement is not reached.
