World’s Largest M in Platteville, Wisconsin

A colossal white "M," the world's largest, stands northeast of Platteville, a testament to regional mining heritage. This gigantic letter, 241 feet high and 214 feet wide, faces south at a 45-degree angle. Its origin traces back to 1924 when Platteville's engineering club sought to outdo Colorado School of Mines. A snowy prank in 1936 by engineering students Pat Medley and Alvin Knoerr revived the ambitious idea. Their temporary winter creation proved so popular that a permanent version was planned by the following year.Using 400 tons of limestone, students constructed the permanent "M" by 1937 with landowner and university backing. Ongoing maintenance with cement, lime, and whitewash ensures its enduring visibility. The landmark gained wider recognition through an appearance in Life magazine and occasional illumination. In 1987, MTV utilized the mound for a live event, having students form the music channel's logo. Platteville even leveraged the "M" to host Disney's Mickey's Hometown Parade in 1998. Visitors can still explore the "M" year-round, with an option to climb over 200 stairs for a closer view.
