Xbox is introducing a disc-to-digital program, allowing owners to convert physical game discs into digital entitlements. This new feature combines the convenience of digital downloads with the permanence of physical media. Beginning August 31, Xbox Insiders can test the program, which supports most Xbox One and Series X disc-based games. By inserting a disc and launching the game, players will gain a digital entitlement. This enables digital play without the disc, as long as the user or a family member is logged in. The digital entitlement also grants access to Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming for eligible titles. Microsoft states that the physical disc will remain functional after conversion. However, each disc provides only one revokable license. If the disc is resold or loaned, the digital entitlement can transfer to a new account. Publishers must opt-in for their games to be included, explaining why "most" but not all titles are supported. Some discs may also be incompatible due to manufacturing differences, which is why older Xbox and Xbox 360 discs are excluded. This program aims to provide players with greater confidence in the longevity of their game purchases.
