Your iPhone has a Siri AI kill switch. Here’s how to use it
Apple has released its new AI chatbot, Siri AI, built on Google's Gemini models, which is available on newer iPhones. This launch occurs amidst growing consumer concern about the societal impact of artificial intelligence. Siri AI indexes iPhone data and understands on-screen activity, offering personalized assistance and web-based information. Crucially, Apple has included a "kill switch" to disable this specific AI agent. Disabling Siri AI does not affect the broader Apple Intelligence platform, which continues to provide system-wide AI features like generative writing and image tools. Turning off Siri AI prevents new conversations with the chatbot and disables voice commands, though past conversations remain accessible. It also somewhat limits the iPhone's Visual Intelligence feature. To disable Siri AI, users navigate to Settings, tap Siri, and select "Turn Off Siri." Despite fears of AI going rogue, Apple's Siri AI is sandboxed and requires explicit user permission for app access. Leaving Siri AI disabled may offer minor battery life improvements and is reversible.
