Your UX design every day carry
The concept of "Every Day Carry" (EDC) in the outdoor community refers to essential tools always kept on hand. Similarly, digital experience designers need a toolkit of frameworks for confident reasoning and leadership. Intuition and emotion play a role in design, but they must be supported by concrete reasoning, as intuition is often unrecognized pattern recognition. To advance in a design career and avoid stagnation, designers should cultivate a strong "design EDC" of proven frameworks. These tools help diagnose problems accurately, defend decisions confidently, and gain respect. The Elements of UX, a five-layer model (strategy, scope, structure, skeleton, surface), helps designers correctly diagnose problems beyond superficial fixes. The Laws of UX, a compilation of psychological principles, provide evidence-based reasoning for design decisions, shifting focus from aesthetics to user experience. Morville's Honeycomb, with its six facets of value (useful, usable, findable, credible, desirable, accessible), offers a framework for discussing and defining valuable user experiences. OOUX (Object-Oriented UX) treats digital experiences as systems of objects, providing structure to manage complexity. These frameworks move designers from "flying by the seat of their pants" to making well-reasoned, evidence-based decisions, making them indispensable.
