Zelensky says Musk-owned satellite system still restricted in Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine's use of SpaceX's satellite systems, Starlink and Starshield, remains partially restricted within Ukraine. These restrictions significantly impede the Ukrainian military's ability to utilize drones for intercepting Russian drones and delivering supplies to front-line troops. Ukrainian officials are actively investigating the cause, with conflicting accounts attributing the limitations to either a political decision by the Trump administration or Elon Musk. SpaceX claims technical issues, while internal company sources suggest White House involvement, and the White House points to Musk. Musk himself indicated the U.S. government controls Starshield and dictates usage limits. Former President Trump, however, denied White House involvement in the restrictions. Previous reports suggested Musk proposed throttling these networks to Trump, who reportedly did not object, though a White House official denied this. The systems, previously functional at speeds up to 400 kilometers per hour, are now limited to 161 kilometers per hour within Ukraine, a speed limit absent in EU countries during recent tests. This indicates a deliberate restriction applied specifically to Ukraine. Ukraine relies on Starlink for communications and defensive drones, while Starshield is used for offensive military operations. Ukraine's chief negotiator has engaged with Jared Kushner to discuss the Starlink issue and potential peace proposals.
