The Zig Software Foundation has left GitHub, citing persistent bugs in GitHub Actions. A key issue involved a "safe_sleep.sh" script that could cause indefinite hangs, crippling CI runners. Zig leadership attributes these problems to Microsoft's increasing focus on AI, leading to a decline in engineering quality. Other open-source developers have also expressed similar concerns. The "safe_sleep.sh" bug was first reported in April 2025 and was only partially addressed in August, with the original thread remaining open. Zig's lead developer, Andrew Kelly, announced their move to Codeberg due to a perceived lack of commitment to engineering excellence from GitHub. Kelly highlighted that GitHub Actions bugs are being neglected, suggesting a shift towards "vibe-scheduling" influenced by AI priorities. This random job selection, combined with other bugs and limited manual intervention, severely impacted Zig's CI system. Consequently, even critical master branch commits were not being checked. The foundation's departure signifies a loss of trust in GitHub's platform for reliable development workflows.
